如何消除煩惱 How to Remove Defilements?

煩惱為何義    何故欲消除    能擾亂其心    不得安樂住    發動諸惡業    令招感苦果    故一切佛子    應除滅煩惱

What is the meaning of ‘Defilement’,

For what reason (that we) desire its eradication?

(Defilements) can agitate the mind,

causing it not to abide in happiness (at ease),

evoking various harmful karma (actions through body, speech or mind),

causing (one) to experience painful fruits (results),

Hence all disciples of the Buddha, should eradicate defilements.

During Group Practise @ SBF yesterday, I shared the above verses and we discussed what defilements were.  The Chinese word “煩惱” captures the meaning rather succinctly, but it appeared to the group that the word ‘defilement’ seem quite alien to most people.  When quizzed for a meaning of ‘defilement’ outside of the Buddhist teachings, we found that most people (within the group) do not use it frequently enough.  We later settled for “that which ‘soils’, ‘dirties’ ” … ‘tarnish’ perhaps?

Defilements literally means ‘that which defiles’, or the impurities within or without (outside of) an object that makes the object impure, dirty, soiled etc.  The pali word is ‘kilesa’, ‘klesa’ in Sanskrit and is typically translated as defilement.

The group described defilements as troubles, problems, anxiety, anger, stress, jealousy etc.  While all these describes what defilements are or at least situations linked to it,  they are more like types of defilements, than describing what defilement really is.  I like the above Chinese verses as it quite nicely captures the common qualities of ‘defilements’.

In forty characters, the above verses describes the two question about defilement, what it is and why we should remove it, then it describes the qualities of defilements, and finally leading to the conclusion that henceforth, all disciples of the Buddha should eradicate defilements.

So what are the defilements you see either in yourself or people around you?  Care to share?

Homework for Heartsutra Workshop @ PMT

Dear friends,

Of the three homework to do, one of them is to searh for “The All” 一切法 in the Pali canon.

Method #1:

The homework to look for the sutta “The All” should be easier if you goto the site www.accesstoinsight.org and click on the link “indexed by sutta“.  Then look for a sutta called “Sabba Sutta” or “The All”.

Method #2:

Use google and search for

“The All” site:accesstoinsight.org

The keyword ‘site:accesstoinsight.org’ tells google to search for “The All” while narrowing your search results to those found in accesstoinsight.org.

Searching google returns more results that are useful and includes not just the “The All” sutta.

Hint: It is found in Samyutta Nikaya 35 (abbrev. SN 35).

PS: Samyutta Nikaya is one of the nikayas under the sutta-pitaka, and is commonly translated as The Connected Discourses.  In the Chinese tripitaka canon, it is under the agamas section 阿含部, under 雜阿含經.
Have fun searching for the sutta!

With metta, ^_^

HOME : A MOVIE HAPPENING

HOME : A MOVIE HAPPENING

The movie HOME directed by Yann Arthus-Bertrand and co-produced by Elzévir Films and EuropaCorp (Luc Besson’s company) and supported by PPR

Yann Arthus-Bertrand became famous through the “Earth from above,” a photographic portrait of aerial shots of our planet. Three million copies of his book have been sold and his free, open-air exhibitions have been seen by more than one hundred million people.

HOME carries on this tradition. This feature will be made up of aerial images which have been filmed in more than fifty countries around the world. A voice-off will offer constructive hindsight into the major environmental and social challenges facing our world.

The worldwide release of the movie will be organized by EuropaCorp on June 5th, 2009 – World Environment Day – in cinemas, on television, on DVD and on the Internet around the world. The aim of this simultaneous worldwide broadcasting is to enable as many people as possible to watch the movie together.

The objective of HOME is not to make a profit. Its only benefit will be to contribute towards increasing awareness of our responsibility towards the planet. Profits will be donated to Goodplanet.org.

HOME IS CARBON OFFSET
Greenhouse gas emissions which are caused by air-travel and hours of photography by helicopter will be offset by supporting clean development projects (biogas production project in the Hassan district in India, cf. appendix)

Buddhist Interact Club @ Manjusri Secondary School

In May 2009, Venerable DingRong and me conducted a Students’ Heart Corner Programme (quite wordy in retrospect!) at Manjusri Secondary School.

The Students’ Heart Corner Programme (SHC) is a pilot programme aimed at giving the students at Manjusri Secondary School an additional avenue to interact with members of the Buddhist Sangha (monastic) community so that they may learn to cope with their emotions and be able to better handle stress and pressure in school. Structure and Duration

The pilot programme ran successfully every Friday for a group of 10 to 15 students, for the month of May, 2009. The programme included activities such as: Simple Awareness Meditation • Group Dialogue • Sharings • Hymns • Each session was conducted by us venerables and was assisted by Mrs Cheng and Mr Ng. The sessions was conducted at the Dharma / Multi-purpose Hall and lasted over 1.5 hours each.
