Digital Buddha Vacana on Linux/Ubuntu using WINE

If you are using Linux/Ubuntu or any flavour of Linux that supports WINE, then you can install the Digital Buddha Vacana 1.5 on your Linux machine using WINE.

First, you must first download Digital Buddha Vacana 1.5 (Windows Edition). 

Next, simply follow the instructions I've prepared at WineHQ.

What works Pre-installation steps

1. Using winetricks, install MFC42.DLL

Working functions

Installation  Running of app Sound (Bell sound) Scheduled run (I personally cannot believe it actually works in Ubuntu!) Options setting and saving About dialogue

What does not Prior to installing MFC42.DLL using winetricks, app failed to run. When run, the following error occurred: err:module:LdrInitializeThunk Main exe initialization for L"C:\\Program Files\\DBVWin\\DBVWin.exe" failed, status c0000135

Fixed by installing MFC42.DLL using winetricks.

What was not tested None.

Additional Comments

Prior to running app, please install MFC42.DLL using winetricks.

How to enable Chime for DBVPalm

Overview This details the installation process for the wav file for dbvpalm app.

Steps After installing dbvpalm.prc, do the following: 1. Copy dbvpalm.wav to a folder “/Palm/Launcher/” in an SD card. 2. Insert SD card into your Palm.

Run DBVPalm and it should play the chime upon starting.

System Requirements 1. Palm OS based PDA with SD card slot. 2. For Sony Clie PDAs, a 3rd party add-in is required. See Notes below for detail. 02 July 2006

Contains resource files “buddhavacana.pdb”, “dbv.wav” and “dbv.dat”.

Installation Notes

Download dbvhpc2k.zip to your PC. Extract the corresponding cabfile for your HandheldPC as stated above. Copy the cabfile to your HandheldPC through a CF card or ActiveSync. Disconnect your HandheldPC from your desktop PC.If installing via CF card, insert CF card into HandheldPC. On your HandheldPC itself, locate the cabfile and open/execute it to start the installer.

If you want to retain the cabfile after installation, make a copy of it before installing or modify it to be “Read-Only”.

MFC Win CE Redistributable for HPCPro

1. Allow DBVHPC to run on HPC2000 devices

Note

The current package 1.0.1 was built for HPC/Pro (wince2.11) devices and works with HPC2000 devices that has the wince2.11 mfc runtime redistributable libraries.

Users who are having problems with running DBVHPC on their HPC2000 devices, may download this file and copy the appropriate dlls for their device into \windows folder.

Fixes:

This release is a patch to properly remove all files and directories during uninstall.

Note:

Please uninstall the earlier version if you have it installed.

Installation

1. Download dbvppc.1.0.1.arm.zip into your PC.

2. Unzip dbvppc.arm.cab from this zipfile into your PC.

3. Do not run or doubleclick on this cabfile in your PC.

4. Copy the cabfile dbvppc.arm.cab into the “\My Documents” folder in your PocketPC.

- You may also copy it to any folder in your PocketPC and it should work.

5. Click on the file dbvppc.arm.cab in your PocketPC to install.

You do not need to copy buddhavacana.zip anymore. The resource files are included in the cabfile.

My thanks to those who emailed me for help with installations. It made me realised that I was missing the installation notes.
